You are looking at this backwards.


They are able to pull recruits from those locations easier. The larger populations, especially those in the South, churn out much greater talent. Driving from Atlanta to Clemson is only 2 hours, vice 6.5 hours. Easier to recruit and easier for parents to come see games.
