The coldest VMI game (and probably the coldest game vs. anyone) was
1977, not 1981. The high that day was in the mid-teens, and the wind was strong enough that they did not raise the large American flag that usually flew in the north end zone (probably 30+ mph). My friend was the VMI placekicker. He told me that the entire halftime discussion in the VMI locker room had nothing to do with strategy. It consisted of the coach pleading with the team to go out and actually play the second half.
