I think it could be any combination thereof....


Sometimes prospective athletes with "redshirt" themselves...say maybe doing the 8th grade twice...with the goal of being more physically mature as a senior. If you do that, you can take a couple of high school courses the second time through the 8th grade that count toward those graduation requirements.

Even if they don't do the "redshirt" route, a good student can easily make it to the 12th grade needing only a couple of classes (In VA, the only real requirements for a standard diploma in the 12th grade are Govt. and English 12. Those classes can be taken in summer school either before or after the 11th grade school year. Now days, most school systems even offer on-line versions of some of those classes, that can be taken concurrently with their regular schedule.

In short, any decent student should be just a couple of credits shy of a "standard" diploma going into their senior year, and there are a number of ways to knock out those requirements if you need or want to do so...
