I don't think "swing for the fence" works

at any level. I was always taught, and I tried to teach my kids, to strive to hit hard line drives. Occasionally hitters (some more than others) will hit it hard enough and high enough that it will clear the fence. The HRs will come, but I don't think trying to hit them is the right approach as a hitter. Just hit it hard, period, is the answer. I used to joke with my daughter that in her quest to hit line drives, "occasionally you might slip up and hit a home run". She only hit 3 home runs in her HS career, but she ended up with 96 career hits and had about a .400 career batting average. The home runs are nice and get all the glory, but give me a group of high BA hitters who can run any day.
