The 100 miles doesn't sit well with me. But, as I posted in another . . .
response, no matter what the distance, there is always a chance of somebody being slightly over. At 100, that checks the "no" box for a large number of possible cases, because some kids don't live within 100 miles of an FBS school. But, if you are going to have a rule, you have to stick with it. If you come along and say 110 is okay, what about 111? You are continually resetting the distance, and there is always a number 1 mile higher.
On the coach leaving, I don't agree with any sort of waiver there, nor releases from LOI's. You go to a school. I'm old school on that. I didn't agree with a good many things Jim Weaver did, but when he stuck to his guns on the Iowa wrestlers, he did the right thing. I'm not a fan of college free agency.
On the medical waivers, it is a tough call. It leaves the NCAA too much to rule on. You have to have some guidelines, or hard rules, or it becomes a free for all. What family members apply? Immediate? Grandparents? How about that aunt that raised somebody? Or didn't raise them? Or that close family friend that practically raised them? It is open to a lot of abuse and question.
I fall more in line with @jjbeat above, if a situation is that dire, perhaps the kid should be sitting a year, and focusing on being with the family member, in which case, they simply transfer, sit a year, then finish up their eligibility. Maybe you give those kids an extra year, if they've already been redshirted. That seems reasonable to me.
Name calling . . . . grow a pair and deal with it. But, at the same time, where do you draw a line? What if the kid was physically assaulted, not just verbally? Got death threats? That is all a very nebulous area to be in. I don't really know the answer on that one. We all know what it was really all about, and regardless of what is in place, in terms of guidelines, it'd be easy to get around it.
