Is that if you drop the ball after giving the fair catch signal, you can't advance it.

So
If you are on the 5 yard line
and wave fair catch
and then drop the ball
and then pick up the ball

You get the ball at the five yard line

I think the rule would be more popular if people weren't worried about that.
Maybe they should let you call fair catch AFTER you catch the ball.

Probably a crazy idea.
