necessarily made in a vacuum. It is not wrong to say he could have left four years earlier given the on field results BUT, it ignores one very large reality. Charlie Steger was getting ready to retire and Jim Weaver's health was declining rapidly and would take him out the door as well. As he always did Frank made the decision that best benefitted VT. He stayed because, even in a declining phase, he was better than what VT could have attracted with leadership in flux and, probably much better than an AD in declining health with a spotty reputation for replacing coaches would have even been able to pursue. That is the reality of those years.
