I hear ya but i think your thoughts show some level of thinking

that is beyond what 18 to 22 year olds are capable of handling. as adults, we're adept at compartmentalizing and putting things in boxes. we've worked in the professional marketplace and that gives us a certain perspective. they're young and as hyper concentrated as they are on making it to the next level or living out a dream, they can't compartmentalize the school and how the overall experience impacts them.

having gone through a recruitment process for baseball and lacrosse, there wasn't one kid that i went through the process with that completely forsake the impact of the school itself. it matters a lot. even the kids most focused on their sport (ie less academically inclined) as a potential pathway to the pros were enamored and highly considerate of the school. parents or adult figures play a huge role in this as well because they provide the context of being happy outside of the sport and the overall experience. if the kid isn't happy, the family isn't happy, and everything suffers (school and sports).
