Even though it may not make much sense for the Pac-12 to go this route

it may make sense when it comes to how much of a percentage in the ownership of the content. Is it better to continue down a road where you retain a majority interest in the content vs. give up a majority share (maybe even complete control) and get a smaller slice of the pie (aka the re-negotiation of Tier 1 media rights).

I think it is safe to assume that the Pac-12 was not going to see an increase in pay if it had agreed to re-negotiate its Tier 1 rights. If the Pac-12 had received a ballpark figure from ESPN, then it may have been a significant decrease to the point where the ACC's deal looks like Swofford had hit the jackpot for the schools. Heck it may have even been less than AAC's deal. Ultimately it may come down climbing up a huge mountain by yourself vs. bending over and taking one up the tailpipe for the next X number of years.

Hypothetical scenario - Everyone (including ESPN) knows how much of a pickle the Pac-12 is in with its network. So let's assume you are the Pac-12 Commissioner negotiating with ESPN. Let's assume ESPN's "best and final" offer is 10 less money than what the AAC received and the contract would end the same year as the ACC's contract. Do you take the deal or not? Yes, I know ESPN is intentionally low balling the Pac-12 in this scenario.
