Google has offices there so the authority isn't an issue


Someone in the EU, like in the US, could try to start a competitor. They likely wouldn't be successful; that's where the anti-trust comes in.

I don't know their or our anti-trust laws, but I suspect they are accusing google of certain practices which are illegal in the EU (and similar to but perhaps more stringent than the US) which make it even harder for competitors. It's not unlike Microsoft in 98 getting hit by the US DOJ and then the EU in ~2004.

FWIW, the Mississippi AG announced yesterday that they were preparing to build an anti-trust case against Google, as did Orrin Hatch call on the FTC last year, and so on and so on; so this isn't really just one side of the ocean picking on Google.
