Quick thoughts on the NC State sweep
Well, THAT was certainly fun.
The Hokies completed a 3-game sweep of the NC State Wolfpack today with a 1-0, 3 hit shutout by Carrie Eberle. The sweep moves the Hokies into first place tie in the ACC with a 5-1 Conference record.
In my series preview this week I wrote, “this promises to be an interesting showdown, pitting NC State pitching, which leads the ACC (1.90 ERA, 7.3 Ks/game), versus the Hokies hitting, which is 2nd in the ACC (.353 team batting average).”
Well, game, set, and match to the Hokies, who pounded out 19 hits and 17 runs during the series, while blasting 5 homeruns. Eberle was outstanding, limiting the Pack to 2 earned runs in 19 innings and picking up all 3 wins. She is now 14-1 on the season with a 1.69 ERA.
The Pack, which had been averaging 1.35 HRs per game, was limited to a single dinger over the 3 games. I think domination may be a good word as the Hokies showed their versatility over the weekend – winning a traditional game Friday 4-2, a run-ruled slugfest on Saturday 12-1, and a pitchers’ duel today 1-0.
Next up: 3 mid-week home games this week versus Binghamton and Lipscomb before another conference road trip next weekend – this time to struggling Pittsburgh (4-21, 1-5 ACC).
I’ll be back later in the week with previews.
Let’s Go Hokies.
