Maybe ten years ago, I encountered one in Southside VA.

Was on my way to a funeral, of all things, and was running on fumes. Reached the point where I HAD to stop at the next gas station. Finally saw one up ahead and pulled in.

Before I had the car off and my seatbelt unbuckled, attendant was at my window asking if I needed a fill up. Then he washed the windows and asked if I needed the oil or antifreeze checked.

Best I could tell, there was no self-service option at this place.

The prize winner was when I gave him the credit card to pay. He went and got one of the 1970's carbon paper credit card imprinters.

I think I know how the characters in The Final Countdown felt. Seemed like I temporarily went back in time 40 years.
