We were not head and shoulders superior to everyone else militarily...


in 1941. Forget WW2, it took losses of men and equipment in the desert in 1980 to get the 4 services to play nice together. And by that I mean Congress finally forced them to do so by law.

Large country and a massive industrial capacity, could put a lot of men in uniform and equip them...but it wasn't like today. There were no Lockheed Martins turning out the best gear in the world. There was no guarantee that officer corps was more experienced, trained, or educated than the Germans. Big difference from today, they take professional development with the utmost seriousness, etc.
