I disagree on 'where you went to college doesn't matter', though neither
you nor I can prove our positions. I've seen way too many people with an Ivy League school next to their name move up in the corporate world when they were not any better than 50 others I could ID at that company.
You did allow that the school name could influence that first job, but in many ways that's the MOST important factor. Where you start. So and so went to Harvard. We're placing that person in our high achiever "Management Development Program" Voila, self fulfilling prophecy.
