The problem with opening that can of worms is that it will have a direct


impact on recruiting since the recruiting periods in college are all prior to the various pro drafts. At least coaches may be forced to keep scholarships in their back pocket in case someone decides to return to college.

Also, there would be a numbers issue in terms of roster management. If a player decides to return to college after his/her pro draft and the team is full, then a coach will be forced to "release" a player in order to make room for the returning player. If the transfer portal has not created free agency in collegiate athletics, then the practice of releasing players to make room for returning players will probably do it. At that point schools may be forced to ask themselves whether the student-athletes are there to get an education or just to play a sport for them?
