Kids have always in the past announced to the world they were transferring from their current schools at the beginning of the spring semester while other kids have, in the past, announced their desire to transfer after Spring practice was over. Happens to many older players who see the hand writing on the wall that they are never going to play at their current school.

The Portal isn't the same as the trade window that exist in the pros which usually has a finite beginning and ending date.

And one thing the Portal makes formal is the current HC can decide to cut off the players scholarship, if the player is foolish to announce before enrollment for say the spring semester.

Another thing that happens is the HC will then cut off all use of the training table, training room, weight room, team meetings and workouts, formal and informal. All of a sudden the player is a former player, and just a regular student. His only access to training facilities is McComas Hall with all the regular students, or to pay and use off campus facilities.

Should a player decide later to take his name out of the Portal, it's then up to a school's HC whether to accept him back on the team or not. I'm sure it's a case by case basis.

Case in point, McClease was back on the team in a week or less. Took longer for Hooker, but he was taken back by Fuente. Other kids have simply burned too many bridges to ever be accepted back, like a certain WR. And in other cases, the HC will simply use the occasion to free up another scholarship for a new player.

Thing to remember about Hooker, while Fuente took him back, Fuente mentioned that Hooker will have to work hard to make up for lost time. Fuente said the lost two weeks could not be considered a vacation by Hooker.
