Right now the school is looking to increase its enrollment

As of today, I have not seen any indication that the school has a hard cap on its enrollment. If VT's enrollment gets up to around 50K or 60K, then I do think the demand for tickets to attend a sporting event at Lane could get up to around 80k. It could be for football or it could be for some other sport (i.e. soccer, 7s, etc). A factor will be how much growth Roanoke and the NRV has in the next couple years. If more alumni are living closer to Blacksburg, then they may attending sporting events they wouldn't normally attend if they lived in NOVA or the 757.

Right now football is very popular with my generation and my mom's generation. However, I don't think football is as popular with my niece's generation (eldest is 13). If another sport (i.e. soccer) ends up being the most popular sport for their generation and younger generations, then it isn't unreasonable to think that they will be just as passionate for their favorite sport as people are passionate about football.

Likewise, if football becomes extinct, then then the sports networks won't curl up into the fetal position and throw themselves a pity party because the world is without American football. Instead, they will fill those time slots with other live content. Another sport will end up taking football's place as the most popular sport or the most popular Fall sport. Youth leagues, HSs, and colleges will find some other sport to fill football's vacancy in the Fall line up. They will either move a sport currently played in a different season to the Fall, add a new Fall sport, extend the season of an existing sport in another season (i.e. basketball starts a few month earlier), or add a second season to a sport that is currently being played in a different season (i.e. Spring and Fall lacrosse). The Earth won't stop spinning and the sports world won't cease to exist because American football isn't being played anymore.
