Regardless when Swofford retires, I am not sure promoting from within

is the right move here. I see the role of the conference commish as being neutral and making decisions for what's best for the entire conference. Instead of what is best for certain subgroups (i.e. NC Mafia) within the conference. A risk to hiring an President or AD from an ACC school is that person may have already formed cliques and developed biases while in the position. If that is the case, then it is very likely the person could take those cliques and biases with him/her to the new position and basically have another version of Swofford.

Whereas, if the ACC hires outside the family, then there is a possibility the person may be entering the job as a blank canvas. I do think the ADs you mention would be good choices for the job and probably would do excellent in that position. However, I would have a problem if the ACC Commish (i.e. Babcock) ended up making a lot of decisions in VT's favor because what may be "good" for VT may not be "good" for the entire conference.
