ACC Men's Swimming & Diving Championships - Preview and Day 1 Results

It's finally here! The first ACC Men's championship under Sergio Lopez. The men have had a great season going 7-1 in dual meets with the only loss coming by 19 points @ Virginia. They have a great chance of finishing in the top 5 in the ACC Championship this week. The teams I expect to be in the top 5 come Saturday night will be NC State, Louisville, Virginia, Florida State, and the Hokies. Georgia Tech, Notre Dame and UNC should be right there competing to get into the top 5 as well.

Commonwealth Clash points are on the line and would be HUGE to the overall total with the T&F sweep this past weekend.

Names to watch for this years ACC Swimming & Diving Championships:
Lane Stone, So (200 Free, 500 Free, 1650 Free)
Ian Ho, Sr (50 Free, 100 Free, 100 Fly)
Norbet Szabo, Sr (200 IM, 100 Fly, 200 Fly, 200 Free)
Sam Tornqvist, So (100 Back, 200 Back, 200 IM, 400 IM)
Jacob Lamparella, Sr (50 Free, 100 Free, 100 Back)
Antani Ivanov, Fr (200 Free, 500 Free, 100 Fly, 200 Fly)

Note: Szabo, Tornqvist and Ivanov will have to drop one individual event due to the 3 event maximum rule.

Day 1 Results:
200 Medley Relay -

1:06.82 (20.69) 1:25.75 (18.93)
18.93 from Ian Ho to anchor the 50 free is fast and if he can repeat / build on that in the 50 Free could find himself in the A final.

1) Ivanov, Antani FR 2) Szabo, Norbert SR
3) Manoff, Philip FR 4) Stone, Lane SO

5:52.15 (1:08.54) 6:16.08 (1:32.47)
Bronze medal, new school record by over 3 seconds with 2 freshmen and a sophomore. Unfortunately out-touched by UVa by .08 for the silver...
Watch this relay for years to come. Holy Cow! 1:37.47 anchor split from Lane Stone is blazing fast! He will find himself competing for the podium in the 200 Free if he repeats that performance later this week.

Heading into tomorrow the Hokies sit in 7th place with 122 points. Louisville lead with 171 and UVa slotted in 5th with 133.

Here is the link to the live results to follow throughout the weekend with finals being streamed on ESPN3.

Go Hokies!
