She was signed at the last minute when Duff decided to not play.


The only catcher we had after Duff quit was Walton. Scot didn't want to go into the season with only one catcher, so he landed Lawther at the last minute. She was basically insurance.

As far as walk on, there is little difference between a walk on and a 25% scholarship player. If the player has good grades, the coach can usually work with admissions to get some partial academic scholarship money. In some cases, academic money is more than most partial scholarships. That's why schools with a large endowment (UVA, UNC, Duke) usually have very strong Olympic sports teams, and schools like VT, NCSU, and Clemson are at a disadvantage.
