He's a hero to a lot of military families who've lost a service member.
I'm not sure if he's still doing it, but he used to lead a foundation called Snowball Express that would take thousands of kids and their surviving parent, fly them first class (thanks to an agreement with American Airlines IIRC), to a city and have a week long amazing experience around Christmas time. They got to go to games, concerts, got xmas gifts, and ended with a parade where they were the honorees and got to ride on floats and be showered with love and cheers.
Probably most importantly, the kids and the survivors got to spend time with others in the same situation.
My Dad was a city manager in Dallas and worked with Gary and his foundation one year and couldn't say enough good things about both.
