This is what we've chosen to do as well


I'm sure it's not the ideal and someone will argue that the kids are only motivated to study hard because of money and once the money isn't there (i.e., college) they won't do it, but it's what works for us. Each quarter they keep half of what they earn to spend and we stick the other half in savings.

We chose not to pay for chores because we wanted them to understand everyone has a job to do in keeping the house running. Probably in the long run paying them for chores instead of grades wouldn't do much damage to their work ethic but why risk it?
