We asked Ty Nix about him in October.


“DJ is a very talented kid and the speed of the game is something you have to get adjusted to. Currently at this moment it looks like he’s going to redshirt for us but I really don’t know. It’s like injuries. If something happens one particular day we may have to factor him in. But right now he’s scheduled to redshirt.”

No indication of a suspension in that answer.

He was a true freshman who probably was pegged for a redshirt year, and those guys typically don't dress on the sidelines for games. And we're never at practice, so there was no reason to notice he wasn't there. (If indeed he was suspended from practice as well, which I'm not sure is the case.)

So yeah, you can see how a first-year player who nobody really gave a second thought to slipped through the cracks of everyone's attention.
