I think the portal is going to help VT a LOT, hear me out...

I think we're in the sweet spot. Teams like us...the "decent to good" P5 teams are going to clean up in the portal. I think many of us are looking at this all wrong. We think the Dabo's and Saban's are going to come take our players. I don't think that's realistic. They have a monopoly on five star talent for the most part. Its far more likely that kids we recruited that end up at Clemson or Bama transfer back to us. We will also benefit on the other side of it. A guy like Hazelton that wanted a bigger stage is an example of that. I am also closely watching the recruiting of Central Michigan DE Mike Danna. That kid has NFL potential, but somehow ended up at Central Michigan. A school like us is the perfect fit. Good to elite players from non P5 teams will end up at schools like us, NC State, Wisconsin, GT, etc. you know...schools you know, that will give you more exposure, but you also know you'll play. Jumping to Bama or Clemson is too risky.

I view Kumah as an outlier. Rising Senior players that are expected to contribute a lot aren't going to be leaving us. Our rising young stars like Tre Turner aren't going to start leaving either. If they were at a place like Toledo, Ball State, or ECU they might. But we're just big enough of a name that if you're starring here you'll stay put, rather than risk everything for a school like Bama or Clemson. I predict its the portal that will ultimately take us back to competing for ACC titles. For all the Sam Denmarks that leave, we'll find a solid player in the portal that fills a critical need. I know this staff is going to work the heck out of it too, effort isn't our issue with recruiting. I am in the portal now. C'mon in, its kind of nice in here. Its not the movie Poltergeist....its fine.
