I have my own thoughts about where I wish the program would go

But I can assure you they arent shared by anyone in the administration.

I feel that if VT wants to become a destination job, they need someone who is a system coach, rather than someone who tries to out-recruit the others in the conference.

Buzz certainly had an idea about what he wanted in a roster, I'm just not sure what he wanted jives with what can sustain long term success at VT. There will be a rolloer coaster with Buzz where there will be 3 good years and then 2 bad years trying to build the roster back up. VT just isn't a destination for high school recruits year-in and year-out. You have to recruit guys who can fit into a defined role, with a system that minimizes their inherent weaknesses.

For instance, Shaka Smart at VCU made a killing off of players who had a knock on them coming out of high school, but knew his system would allow them to play freely and be athletes. He is running into trouble at Texas by spending too much time recruiting guys like Mo Bamba who never fit into his system where the players really shine in years 3 and 4.

Tony Bennett is another excellent example. He turned UVA into a destination job by bringing a system that can now churn out players that fit perfectly into their system.

I wouldnt place a huge emphasis on a proven recruiter as much as I would a proven evaluator. Someone with a plan for their roster and how to get there. Because theyll likely be starting from scratch at VT.
