Agreed. No disrespect to the smaller schools...

but there are some states where the big state school rules:
* Ohio State is Ohio's team
* WVU is West Virginia's team
* Maryland is Maryland's team
* The Vols are Tennessee's team
* The Razorbacks are Arkansas' team
* LSU is Louisiana's team

Take Marshall for example. They have a following among alums and possibly in Huntington... but talk to most people from West Virginia and they follow the 'Eers. Same with the Terps in Maryland (for those that follow college sports). USNA is not a Maryland school - they have a national mission and most midshipmen come from the other 49 states. I think USNA would even be offended if someone were to suggest they represent "Maryland Pride". You kind of have to know the lay of the land on some of these.

"New York's team" is interesting. Syracuse and St. John's both make that claim. Hard for me to say since I am not from there.
