Three main reasons (IMO)

--high school to D-1 is tough. A redshirt always helps (like football).
--as talented and athletic as he is, Mehki was raw (still is in some aspects) and needed the extra time
--AA David McFadden was the 165 allowing Mehki to take the redshirt. If we had noone at 165, then Mehki would have wrestled as a tFr like Bolen(who filled in at 174 due to Epperly loss).
