Nice! A coworker got 37 years out of his old unit.

Unfortunately, it seems no one manufactures HVAC equipment like that anymore. My old unit is an American Standard, and the only issue we had ever had prior to last week was a bad contactor in the outdoor unit. Given that it is entirely possible that my electrical system contributed to the demise of the compressor, I have no hard feelings towards American Standard. American Standard and Trane are both owned by Ingersoll Rand now, and are essentially the very same equipment. I'll be going back with the exact same model of American Standard (14 SEER, 3 ton)...I looked at more efficient models, but several HVAC techs I spoke to say they didn't think it was worth it, due to marginal energy savings and lots more potential failure points (2-stage compressors, modulating fans, etc.). So, I'll stick with the older, tried and true technology.

If I get 14 years out of this one, I'll be happy.
