I got news for ya. You've ALWAYS been responsible for paying sales tax on

online purchases. The question was whether the seller collected it from you and remitted it to the state on your behalf, like brick and mortar stores do. Any time they didn't, you were supposed to file a Use Tax return with the Virginia Department of Taxation. Furthermore, there has been a line on the Virginia Individual Income Tax Return for SEVERAL YEARS now where you're supposed to add unpaid use tax and reduce your refund (or increase what you owe). If you had online purchases on which you did not pay sales tax, and you left that line on your tax return blank, and then signed that return, you're guilty of perjury and possibly tax fraud, if the amount were significant enough.
