Maybe we should build a wall then. Seriously, a few ways to look at this...
What makes "Southern"? Is it the make up of the students/citizens, history, geography? Historically Va has been in the South so we can eliminate geography and history. Been to any southern cities in the last 20 years and noticed where all of the growth is coming from? Much like NOVA they are made up of northerners and they bring their strong personalities and beliefs with them changing the culture of the town. Charlotte, Atlanta, etc. I live in Charleston, SC and can tell you the residents here are about as southern culturally as Williamsburg residents are Colonial.
Other SOUTHERN schools have the same issue as you bring up. I remember reading recently Alabama was attracting a lot of out of state students from up north. My roomate at VT was from PA and wanted to attend a school in the south.
Back to the point, we're all on this board for FOOTBALL. Lets say both our POV's are right and VT can go either way. Which marketing strategy is going to benefit and promote the football program? Trying to be a northeast team, hanging out with a bunch of losers and low key fanbases or playing strong programs that will help fill up Lane and help the brand of VT?
