I'm far from a Fuente apologist, but I also wasn't in love with...
...the production I saw from Torrian Gray's coaching. It seemed like Tech's secondary could rarely locate the ball in the air under his tutelage, and was frequently susceptible to "jump ball" situations. I can't even begin to count the number of times VT was penalized for pass interference, or just got outplayed to the ball on 50/50 lobs downfield. ECU seemed to have zeroed in on that strategy as well as anyone.
I am anything but an insider, and I have no idea what actually transpired between Gray, Fuente, and the rest of the staff, but based solely on what I saw on the field, I was never overly enamored with Gray's coaching results. I don't follow recruiting, so I wouldn't know if his departure was a huge blow to Tech's inroads with top in-state talent, but if I'm being totally honest, I wasn't totally devastated when Gray left.
I am a big fan of Torrian Gray the player, but that doesn't necessarily translate into blind loyalty to Torrian Gray the coach, and as such I had my reservations about his efficacy as an instructor. I'm sure this won't be a popular take, but it's my honest opinion.
