I was a big fan of GE/Hotpoint top loaders for decades...

The last one I had reached a design summit. The GE/Hotpoint always had a suspension system with a heavy counterweight that let it muscle through unbalanced loads. It was easy to remove the front panel of the cabinet and you could repair most things from the front.

My drum grenaded and I had to buy a new one - still a top loader with an agitator of sorts - but with electronic rather than mechanical controls, and no counterweight. The agitator tends to works small loads to one side and it gets grossly out of balance and then walks across the room on the spin cycle. I had the GE tech come out - he hooked up a computer to the washer and reported that I had the latest software upgrade and the new style feet (never had a washer repairman talk about software before) and that the company line was that the machine was "operating as designed". He lamented the design changes - said the techs are all upset that you can't open the cabinet - you have to lay the machine over and access everything from the bottom. He did offer some tips that help to "work around" the unbalance issues.

Had I known, I might have went looking for a good used machine.
