You're missing the point..
College is the only path to the NFL. A much smaller % of elite P5 players would elect to go to college during their 18-22 years if there was a more direct path to the NFL.
Our system imposes college on a group of people that want to pursue an athletic, not academic career. So it stands to reason that football, not academics, is the primary pursuit and ambition during a VERY narrow window of their lives where they stand to make millions of dollars from a perishable athletic gift, with a short shelf-life, bestowed on very few.
This approach does not forfeit their ability to obtain an education.
