Experienced a similar situation with a "Gray Market" car I purchased

Originally titled in NC, but they left a VIN digit off of the title and FL's computer system wouldn't accept it. Eventually had to visit a FHP office to certify the VIN, and send that to paperwork up to NC so they could reissue a correct title. Once that was in hand, FL quickly issued my title and tags.

Could only guess that NC's "best and brightest" probably didn't work at their DMV.
