Lag, here is a better account. Looks like I mixed up the story.


Don Luis, the youth in question, was a Powhatan Confederacy youth who encountered a ship blown into the Chesapeake Bay by a storm. He at some point sailed back to Spain and became a young social climber. He returned as part of Jesuit mission in 1567, which was totally destroyed shortly after it was founded. There is even a theory now that Don Luis became Opechancanough (!!!) as a result of the violence that perpetuated after the massacre of the mission and subsequent retaliations by the Spanish. The details have matured quite a lot since I last read about it- either from people making stuff up to fill in the gaps or real knowledge.
