I recently learned there was a Spanish mission on the York River

This was between Pre-Columbian time and the arrival of the English.

The mission didn't take but there was some kind of interaction between the Powhatan Confederacy and the mission. As a gesture of good will the Spanish left a young priest in training behind when they abandoned, promising to return- I believe they did but saw no sign of their mission or the young priest, so they didn't even bother to get off the boat. Some search party.
