Because he was going to likely be fired at the end of the 2019 season
after what is going to possibly be a down year for WVU. He wanted to use the Houston job as leverage to renegotiate his contract since he knew he was on thin ice. WVU declined to match Houston's offer.....so he left. His buyout dropped substantially on January 1 so the timing was right. It was a win-win for both sides. Many, if not most, fans had turned on him and were happy to see him go, and he's probably happy he got a pay raise and gets to move to an area where he has strong ties
