KU's collapse probably also coincides with the resignation of Mark Mangino
Some have argued that KU peaked in 2007 (the year they beat VT in the Orange Bowl) and the program was on the decline. I am not sure I agree with it since KU has never really had a strong football tradition. In terms of HCs that coached at least 50 games at KU and had an overall winning record, Mangino is only 1 of 3 HCs on that list. The other 2 are A.R. Kennedy and Jules V. Sikes (yes the V stands for Verne).
A.R. Kennedy (1904-1910), 65 games, 52-9-4, forced out by conference rule change requiring coaches to be full-time faculty members.
Jules V. Sikes (1948-1953), 60 games, 35-25, left to become the HC at East Texas State. He may have been fired for going 2-8 in his final season at KU which also happened to be his only losing season at KU.
Mark Mangino (2002-2009), 98 games, 50-48, resigned following the launch of an investigation of his coaching practices. [Post edited by VTHokie2000 at 12/17/2018 4:22PM]
