The Big 12 and ACC have opposite qualities in some respects

The Big 12 has relatively few "big media markets" outside of TCU and Texas, and maybe OU. But with the exception of Kansas, all of the Big 12 schools have a reasonably passionate football following. The average east coast fan has no idea what great fans Iowa State has, for example. And most of the Big 12 is competitive and plays entertaining football, albeit without very good defense.

The ACC has all of these big media markets that look good on paper. Boston. Atlanta. Miami. Pittsburgh. But those markets mean nothing when no one is really watching. Along with the Canes, Clemson, FSU and Virginia Tech are still the biggest television draws. And near half of the ACC doesn't draw a pulse when it comes to general fan interest.

On the whole, I think the Big 12 has better leadership than the ACC if for no other reason than the institutions have more similarity and some of those prone to creating issues -- Texas -- may have come to see how missteps can adversely impact their fiefdom. The popular storyline has Texas and OU bolting for the Big Ten or SEC, but I see no reason why either school would want to do that -- so long as the difference in money is not too great.
