I understand the notion of adding TV eyeballs for subscriber numbers.

I think that is a mistake. Conferences should not make expansion decisions solely based on how many subs it could add. I think it's an outdated and long-term will be an ineffective model, particularly with the cable package industry getting turned upside down. Number of potential subscribers within a footprint will not matter as much as just having a top-to-bottom elite conference.

The goal should be to establish the premier conference based on strength of teams. The SEC, while divided up nicely in each state for sub numbers, is successful across the country because the strength of their teams has made it a must-watch across the country. In addition to the SECN, they get a huge deal from CBS for a broadcast game every week. Not because they have a wide footprint of available TV subs, but because their quality has been off the charts for a long time.

UCF is the only program within the ACC's footprint with the potential to make the kind of leap that TCU and Utah made. Sub numbers should not matter. The chance to add a potential Top 25 football program to the Clemson/FSU/VT/Miami core is what should matter, particularly when the alternative is letting the Big 12 scoop them up.
