Commonwealth Clash

With the completion of the fall season, VT has a 4-2 lead on UVa. Last year at this time we had a 4-1 lead (no game in women's soccer last year). Our gains in soccer were offset by the loss in men's cross-country. We also lost .5 points by not sweeping in volleyball.

Looking ahead to the winter, there are 7 points at stake as follows:
1) Men's basketball (away 1-15; home 2-18). Each game is .5 point. Split in 2018. I think we all have an opinion on how this will play out this year.
2) Women's basketball (away 1-10; home 2-28). Each game is .5 point. UVa won both in 2018. We are rated higher and should win at home and possibly win on the road.
3) Wrestling (home 2-16). We should be a strong favorite to repeat our win from last year.
4) Men's Indoor Track. The higher scorer at the ACC Championships gets the point. We won comfortably last year but lost a number of top performers while UVa's losses were minimal. We bring in a highly rated class and the meet is in Blacksburg from 2-21 to 2-23. We should outscore them.
5) Women's Indoor Track. Same time and place as the men. We won easily last year and should still have the edge this year although I did see where we lost out top pole vaulter who won the event last year and finished 4th in the NCAAs as a freshman.
6) Women's Swimming. Same as track, it is based on the conference championships beginning on 2-20. Virginia will repeat their 2018 performance and easily win the point and probably win the overall meet which will give them a leg up since conference championships are the tie-breaker.
7) Men's Swimming. We also have no chance here in flipping this point from last year. The meet begins on 2-27.

If we can split the 4 basketball games, there is a good chance we win the winter season 4-3. That would give us a 3 point lead heading into the spring, the same as last year. It should be an eventful end of February with 6 of the 7 points being contested between 2-16 and 2-28. Go Hokies!
