Fire is a normal part of the forest lifecyle

One of the key contributors to the intense fires burning in the west is people moving into areas where fire is a normal part of life. When they do this there are no fires for years and the fuel builds and dries so that eventually a small fire can't be stopped.

Very much like the increased damage from hurricanes as more and more people build along the coast, this is the expected result. There is more to damage and less natural protection.
