College athletes cannot be paid
Athletic departments currently spend every dollar they earn. That's necessary for maintaining the non-profit appearance. All but the most successful programs require supplemental income from the school treasury or from student fees. The typical program uses football and/or basketball revenue to fund all of the other sports. So if the athletic budget will soon include player salaries:
Can they raise enough additional revenue for salaries? How?
Will all athletes be paid, or just football players? Why?
If the revenue doesn't grow, is this the end of non-revenue sports?
When the first paycheck is issued to a college athlete, it establishes a value for their services. What prevents every former college athlete from filing a suit for back pay, plus interest?
Even the few programs that can afford to pay players, and the fewer that would be willing to, dare not venture into this money pit. It is the destruction of amatuer sports, even at the high school level (why not?).
If the plaintiffs prevail, athletic scholarships will disappear and all college sports will be operating on the Div III format.
