football reference with the 3 schools mentioned but, I think Michigan State, Louisville, UNC, etc. point to a much larger issue with college sports in general. With the explosion in money college athletics has become big business that it appears a lot of university leadership is ill equipped to manage. Somewhat ironic when you consider that even the largest athletic budgets are miniscule in relation to overall university spending. However, managing academics, grant funding, etc. is probably a little more straightforward/sterile than the issues/complexity of donors, athletes, TV, etc. that have a far different outlook than the ivory tower academic. Just my opinion but, these ever increasing "events" will at some point reach a tipping point for competing academic and athletic interests at institutions and it will be interesting to see how university governing bodies sort out the competing interests. You throw the involvement of politicians in that mix and, in my opinion, we will live in interesting times indeed.
