I don't disagree with you that greed would kill the golden goose
However, since the schools (regardless if it was the Presidents or BoVs making the decisions) decided to go down this track, then they may not be willing to suddenly put the train in reverse even if it means leaving millions (or billions) of dollars on the table. Also, DI and/or DII schools may not be willing to eliminate the usage of athletic scholarships because it could have a negative impact on their current business model for athletics.
Something else to consider is that the schools may be forced to change their policies because of new laws passed by either Congress or their state government. For example, in some states schools are allowed to use state taxpayer dollars to fund collegiate capital athletic projects. VA is currently not one of those states, but I think LA and OH are or were at one time. If the state passes a law to change that policy, then it would force the public schools (and maybe even the private schools) to change how they budget and/or plan for future capital athletic project. Maybe even ones that were already in the works.
