Article makes it look like FSU and Clemson would leave the ACC
but doubt that they would. FSU has made great gains in its academic reputation the past decade. Clemson alumni would rather be linked to ACC academics than SEC (especially with their dislike of USC-East). Clemson is a charter member of the ACC and takes great pride in that.
If the P-5 ever did divide between football schools and academic schools, I think the ACC would hold together 14.5 strong. Even Louisville with all their problems may want to do all they can to improve their academic standing instead of being viewed as a jock school. The Big 10 would hold together as well as the Pac 12.
I think the SEC would be the conference seeing realignment as Vanderbilt and possibly Florida, Georgia, and even Texas A&M would get great pressure from their alumni to be aligned with "academic" division. "IF" this did happen, the SEC would likely replace those departing schools with schools from the Big 12. To be honest, I just don't see the P-5 realigning in this manner. There wouldn't be enough schools to justify "big boy football" division.
IMHO, the NCAA needs to have a revenue cap for college football and any other revenue earning sports (basketball). If a school goes over that cap, that money goes to other sports programs or even better, for academic scholarships for needy students (focusing on non-athletes) or improvement to school infrastructure (i.e.: campus buildings except for football facilities).
