Ramblings from a local:

Forgive me if this sounds recycled, unrealistic, or written with orange and maroon lenses. Maybe it is, maybe it’s not, but it’s the reality as this fan sees it. I’m a 31 year old lifelong Blacksburg resident and Virginia Tech graduate who has not missed a VT home game since early in the 1994 season. I have attended numerous away games and most bowls in that period of time. I don’t know what all of that means, but I know what it means to me.

Back in the “old days” (haha), my biggest thrill was my dad stopping at the mailbox on Monday mornings when taking me to school, and I’d get the Roanoke Times and we would wonder and hope if VT might be in the Top 25. If we were, I was elated. This was before social media and constant analysis and predictions of rankings and bowl destinations. Man, what a time to be alive.

Back then, the ODU loss would still have been BAD, but it would have been talked about for a day. Folks wouldn’t be talking about giving up or selling their tickets (and thanks very much for those who did for the ND game and allowing 3 obnoxious ND fans to surround me).
We (and yes I will use we when referring to this football team and not justify my use of that word) lost multiple players to the NFL, and had that followed up by unexpected dismissals of other key contributors. Most teams not named Alabama CANNOT rebound from that. I’ll take 4-2 right now. At this point folks probably expected us to be 5-2, with losses to FSU and Notre Dame, and an additional win against ECU in a game that wasn’t played.

Harkening back to the start of this story; when I would get the paper out of the mailbox, I always thought how awesome it would be to have a program like Nebraska, Texas, Tennessee, USC. You know, the blue bloods, the top dogs. Well, maybe we still don’t, but I bet their fans feel a lot worse at this very minute than we do….sitting here undefeated in league play with a very young and raw team.

Bottom line: I’m behind Coach Fuente, Brad Cornelson and all of our coaches and players. I’m not always happy with what I see, but to calm myself down I just think: We are better than Nebraska, FSU, USC, Texas, USC, etc. Just think about that for a moment. Think about budgets, history, alumni (donor) base.

The sky isn’t falling in Blacksburg. In fact, under the leadership of Coach Fuente and Coach Foster and the resiliency of this football team, perhaps the best is yet to come (maybe even in 2018).

Go Hokies!
