I think my problem is when I pick a car I want, I am very specific about it

And that just isn't an option when buying used.

I know people who get good deals on used cars, but they just go searching for a good deal, not searching for a specific make and model.

When I bought my last car, I wanted a Mazda 3 with a manual transmission. There were about 3 used ones to choose from in a 300 mile radius, but there were 3 on the dealer lot, all selling for less than $1000 more than a 2-3 year old used one.

When I bought the minivan, I wanted either a Honda or Toyota that was less than 5 years old for under $15K. After filtering out all the ones with a wreck on their carfax report, that left me with two options within 150 miles.

Clearly other people have different experiences. But I've had WAAAAAY more luck buying a new car and keeping it for 15 years than buying a used one.
