The problem is that FSU-Miami is a bigger rivalry


so that has to be preserved as an annual conference game. Unless you are willing to trade playing UVA annually for someone else. Using SoClose's pods (with 1 minor tweak...flipped the order for 1 pod), the protected pairings would look like this:

Pod A/Pod B
Cuse/BC
Ville/Pitt or Pitt/Ville
TX Tech/TCU
FSU/Miami or Miami/FSU

Pod C/Pod D
VT/UVA
NC State/UNC
Wake/Duke
Clemson/GT

All the pairings are "natural" with the exception of maybe L'ville-Pitt. The pods did a good job of preserving as many of the rivalries as possible. Finally, each pod has 1 member from the Southeast US which is a very fertile recruiting ground for the ACC. The only down side to the proposal is Pod A and Pod B get the benefit of having both FL and TX schools. While Pod C and Pod D are stuck with 2 NC schools. It then becomes a question of which is more important; rivalry vs. recruiting benefits? If recruiting is more important, then each pod should have 1 NC school.
