Apparently he didn't have enough credit hours to keep his visa

and the gun charge brought this to light.

From a 5/18/18 RT article:

"In a response filed last week in federal court, Tech called Zhao’s due process complaint “the proverbial red herring.”

“Plaintiff’s failure to take the required number of course credit hours resulted in the termination of his immigration status. Plaintiff admits that he violated the student code of conduct by possessing a prohibited knife. Plaintiff attempts to obscure the fact that Plaintiff’s own actions caused both his immigration problems and his dismissal from Virginia Tech,” the university’s attorneys wrote."
